The concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as a measure of development was officially proclaimed by the Kingdom of Bhutan. Bhutan introduced the concept as an alternative to the more traditional measure of a country's development, Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GNH focuses on the holistic well-being and happiness of the Bhutanese people, taking into account not only economic factors but also social, cultural, and environmental aspects of life.
