The Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment (APPLE) was an experimental communication satellite developed and launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The primary objective of the APPLE satellite was to demonstrate and validate the technologies required for satellite-based communication in India. It was launched on June 19, 1981, using the Ariane launch vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana.
APPLE had a launch mass of about 670 kg and was three-axis stabilized. It was equipped with various experimental systems to test and develop communication technologies.
APPLE was India's first three-axis stabilized experimental geostationary communication satellite.
It played a crucial role in laying the foundation for future communication satellite programs in India. The success of APPLE paved the way for subsequent communication satellite programs, including the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) and the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
